09/13/2004 - OpenMosix userland tools
Successfully installed and set up the OpenMosix userland tools. Now the cluster is automatically
distributing processes betwixt the nodes. Visit this page frequently as we hope to soon have
a web interface to see the current work usage of the cluster.
Only one problem with OpenMosix encountered so far. Python's threads don't get along well with OpenMosix,
and since emerge is a Python product, it dies a violent death at random intervals.
09/08/2004 - DistCC
We now have DistCC running at its full power on the cluster. This tool allows us to distribute large compile
jobs over the entire cluster.
09/01/2004 - We have a clustar!
We recently received the computers for our cluster. Please see the "About" section for details.
About
We recently received eleven Pentium 2 and 3s for our cluster. These are nothing to scoff at. We hope to expand later.
The cluster is currently running Gentoo Linux with the OpenMosix kernel. OpenMosix automatically distibutes processes
to other OpenMosix nodes on the cluster. This means that we can expand the cluster at any time by simply installing
the operating system on it. At this time, we are still in need of a router in order to speed up the local network.
If you would like to join SIG.Cluster or to donate a computer (old or new, doesn't matter), please email UofA.ACM@gmail.com
with the details.
Projects
Currently we are mainly focused on getting the cluster up and running. However we do have plans for a joint project
with the LUG (Linux User's Group). The idea is for a tool (to be called madman) which will allow us to throw
commands at every node of the cluster simultaneously to facilitate the administration of the cluster.
